Dominica Nature Tour       [printable version]      << previous page

This is an 8 day tour suggestion that will show you some of the natural wonders of this beautiful island. The tour can be extended to include relaxation time at one of the resorts in Dominica, or alternatively we would recommend combining this tour with another island such as Antigua, Barbados, St Lucia or Trinidad.

Day 1
Arrive in Dominica and transfer south along the east coast to Beau Rive, located between the villages of Castle Bruce and Sineku. Overnight at Beau Rive Hotel, which is nestled 240 feet above sea level, into a hillside and has dramatic views of the Atlantic. Day at leisure to enjoy the pool and delightful surroundings of the hotel, which is set in three acres of tropical gardens and forest. You can take the forest trail to Richmond River and the beach, which is wild and rocky. The sea can be too rough for bathing but there is a natural rock pool nearby where it is possible to swim when conditions allow and a black sand beach at the village of Castle Bruce one and a half miles to the south.
Day 2
This morning visit the Carib Territory, The only indigenous peoples reserve in the Caribbean, which offers an unique perspective to the island and its heritage. The newly opened Kalinago Barana Aute Carib Cultural Village by the sea has an excellent interpretation centre of the heritage of the Kalingo people. Here you can sample local food, witness craft and dance demonstrations, learn about the traditions of agriculture and fishing and also purchase authentic handicrafts for which the territory is renowned. From here drive to the Emerald Pool located in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park. Follow a short trail past overhanging trees and lush vegetation to a small waterfall and shimmering pool in a grotto in the forest for a refreshing dip. Overnight Beau Rive.
Day 3
Day at leisure to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and perhaps walk the local trails. Overnight at Beau Rive.
Day 4
Today leave the hotel very early to travel into the rainforest at Syndicate located at the foothills of Morne Diablotin to look for the island's national bird the Sisserou (Imperial Parrot) and the Jacquot (Red Necked Parrot) both endemics to Dominica, as well as the nine regional endemics. The Syndicate Rainforest has well maintained trails, which pass through some of Dominica's best easily accessible oceanic rainforest, and is abundant with trees like the giant Gommier (Dacryodes Excelsa), the incredibly buttressed Chataignier (Sloanea Carabea), numerous epiphytes and stranglers. Continue to the famous Indian River, which is so called because the Carib Indians at one time lived on the higher ground up river and used it as a route to the sea and has recently been used as allocation for Pirates of the Caribbean. You are likely to see herons, kingfishers and iguanas along the banks of the river. The rowboats go to an area where the river narrows and visitors can get out and take a walk or go to a bush bar for a drink. We will now head into the hills to Indigo, the studio and art gallery of Marie Fredrick. Marie was born in Deauville, Normandy and came to the West Indies in 1984 and fell in love with the raw beauty of Dominica. She married Clem, a man of the soil who also is
an artist, working with wood and stone. They have made their home and studio near the village of Bourne, creating a neural retreat carved out of a remote, forested mountainside. Marie specializes in pen and ink, watercolour, acrylic and oil pastels. She finds her inspiration in the rhythms of daily life in Dominica- the old shingle wooden houses, the rich blossoms, the birds and the rain forest. We will have a chance to see Marie's art and enjoy their unique tree house style studio and home. We will then enjoy her home cooked lunch. We the head back to the coast to Portsmouth, Dominica's second largest town, to visit Fort Shirley in Cabrits National Park. There are well-marked wildlife trails around the grounds and ruins of this 18th. Century garrison, which is gradually being restored. We head down the Caribbean coast to the capital, Roseau. Overnight at Fort Young Hotel in a deluxe Oceanfront Room.
Day 5
Morning free to explore Roseau or relax by the pool. This afternoon take a boat trip to look for whales. Dominica is blessed with an abundance of both resident and visiting cetaceans, pods of Spinner and Spotted Dolphins, Sperm Whales, False Orcas and at least a dozen other species. Whales and Dolphins are sighted so frequently in these waters that Dominica is widely considered to be one of the best areas in the Caribbean for encounters with these fascinating creatures. Watch as they break the surface and listen to the rhythmic sounds of their clicking communication as you relax on the fast, hydrophone equipped catamarans. Your Whale and Dolphin Safari starts with an educational and boat safety briefing. Remember that these animals are living in their natural habitat, and that their welfare is our primary concern. The 4 hour tour starts along the West Coast; with hydrophones being dropped into the water every 15 minutes or 3 miles to listen for clicks, pings, whistles or singing. The trips have a 90% success rate of seeing a whale. The boat is a 45ft., twin diesel power catamaran, which is Hydrophone & GPS equipped. It is shaded, with 'Heads' US Coast Guard safety equipment. Fish, seabirds and a magnificent view of the island's rugged beauty make this trip an excellent way to spend an afternoon. Overnight at Fort Young Hotel in a deluxe Oceanfront Room.
Day 6
After breakfast drive to the Freshwater Lake, Dominica's largest lake and the source of the Roseau River. Though it is only 55ft. deep, the lake is widely believed to be bottomless and legend tells of a one-eyed monster of the deep that resides in the lake. Here you can kayak or take an hour long trail around the shore and admire the views and the eerie scenery. From Freshwater Lake, there is a more difficult trail to the mist-shrouded Boeri Lake, which is approximately 1 hour away at an elevation of 2800ft.
Drive to Papillote Wilderness Retreat in the Roseau Valley. Afternoon at leisure to enjoy the wonderful rainforest gardens landscaped by the owner, Anne Jno Baptiste, where frogs and other creatures live contentedly with 30 kinds of birds and 19 species of butterfly amongst hot and cold waterfalls and soothing hot mineral pools. Massage and spa treatments are available at an additional cost. Overnight at Papillote Wilderness Retreat.
Day 7
This morning take an airborne journey on the nearby Rainforest Aerial Tram through and above the rainforest. During the 90 minute ride, naturalist guides will explain features about flora and fauna found in the canopy here on the cusp of the Morne Trois National Park which boasts over 172 species of birds and has spectacular views. On the return, stop to explore or swim at the Trafalgar Falls. Return to the hotel for an afternoon of leisure. Overnight at Papillote Wilderness Retreat.
