Belize Holidays

Belize, formerly known as British Honduras, is a tiny English-speaking country with a population of around 350,000. It is best known for its crystalline Caribbean waters, home to the northern hemisphere’s largest barrier reef and the enormous kaleidoscope of fish, sponges, crustaceans, and plants that inhabit it. Here you’ll find some of the best diving in the world, as well as the iconic Blue Hole sea cave. Adding to the reef’s appeal are the 400 or so postcard-perfect islands around it, offering first-class scuba diving, snorkelling, kayaking, sailing and fishing. Look beyond the reef and sun-bleached isles and you’ll discover a country with so much more to offer.

Belize was once the centre of one of the greatest civilizations of antiquity and evidence of the ancient Maya lie strewn about the country. Climb ancient temples for spectacular views of the surrounding jungle. Seventy-five percent of Belize is covered with tropical forest of which 40% is protected. Within this diverse ecosystem are a great number of underground caves, magnificent waterfalls and cool, clear rivers. Belize is also home to the only jaguar reserve in the world, with five different species of wild cats as well as hundreds of birds and exotic plants.

Travellers to Belize quickly discover that what truly makes Belize unique, is the friendly people. Colourful personalities with an array of traditions and customs representing over ten diverse cultures make the Belizean people the country’s greatest resource and stewards of Belize’s tourism. Comprised of the Maya, Creole, Mestizo, Garifuna, East Indian, Mennonite, Arabs, North Americans and Chinese, this harmonious mixture results in one of the most peaceful countries in the region.
