Guatemala Holidays

Guatemala is home to ancient Mayan temples and Spanish colonial cities, traditional highland villages and vibrant Caribbean towns. There are steaming volcanoes, mystical lakes, lazy rivers, remote cloud forests and vast swaths of untamed jungle with over 720 species of birds, as well as mammals like the jaguar and tapir and a great variety of reptiles and insects. What truly make this country unique however, are the modern-day Mayas whose intriguing culture, centuries-old traditions, costumes and myriad languages, continue to thrive today. This outstanding cultural legacy, combined with the genuine hospitality of the people and Guatemala’s astonishing natural beauty makes it a compelling place for travellers.

Guatemala is bordered by Mexico, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador and has both Caribbean and Pacific coastlines, notable mostly for fantastic deep sea fishing and nesting sea turtles. Inland, a vast volcanic mountain chain juts up dramatically to form the Guatemalan highlands, which is the heart of today’s Maya culture. Here, you’ll find Lake Atitlán, with its trio of rugged volcanoes and delightful indigenous towns, including the colourful, sprawling market town of Chichicastenango. Head east from Atitlán and you’ll find the very special, quaint colonial city of Antigua. The country’s northern half is dominated by the sparsely populated department of El Petén. An isolated region that teems with wildlife and is home to Guatemala’s best-known Maya archaeological site Tikal, as well as many other impressive, off-the-beaten-path ruins.
