Mexico is one of Latin America’s most vibrant and diverse destinations, with boundless natural and cultural attractions, and a fascinating history stretching back thousands of years from the ancient Olmec, Maya, and Aztec, through to the arrival of Cortés and centuries of Spanish rule. For all its familiarity, Mexico is capable of surprising at every turn. It is a huge and impressive country with so much to offer, but we will begin by focusing on the Yucatan Peninsula.
Covering three states, Campeche, Yucatan and Quintana Roo, the Yucatan Peninsula separates the Caribbean Sea from the Gulf of Mexico and is among the most diverse in the Western hemisphere. Everyone has heard of its miles of white sand beaches and sparkling turquoise seas, but it is also a region of lush tropical forests, coastal wetlands, dry thorn scrub, unique underground river systems, cenotes, and numerous archaeological sites. The beauty of it all, is that some of the best preserved birding habitats are found alongside some of the most spectacular ancient ruins in the New World.
Bordering Belize and Guatemala, the whole region shares a common Mayan culture and retains strong ties, which can be observed in language, religion, traditional dress and cuisine. This region also shares an abundance of bird and wildlife and could be combined for a multi-destination experience.
